Aurora Australis: The Southern Lights Time-lapse footage of the Aurora Australis, or Southern Lights. This is the Southern Hemisphere equivalent of the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights. Filmed during the Antarctic winter in the general vicinity of McMurdo Station and Scott Base, where the sun is below the horizon for 4 months of the year. Most of the individual clips here were each taken over about a 10 minute period to give you an idea of how much they were moving in real time. "Earthquake Lights" recorded 30 mins before Sichuan quake began, a phenomenon never recorded before this

View the 2 videos regarding a phenomenon, known as “Earthquake lights”. Which have been known to happen at times of earthquakes & recorded through out history, but never recorded (visually) until the earthquake in Sichuan last week. Bizarre colorful (luminous/glowing) cloud phenomenon in the sky was observed about 30 mins before the May 12, 2008 Sichuan earthquake took place. This was recorded in Tianshui, Gansu province ~450kmnortheast of epicenter, by someone using a cell phone.

These clouds seemed to be glowing or somewhat luminous and seemed to resemble some characteristics of the Auroras. They were probably formed by some kind of charged particles released from the powerful seismic events below. Well, I am no expert anyways. See if any scientists are willing to give a full explanation.

Giz reader Robert Woodhead combined two things that I just can't seem to get sick of seeing: Stuffing Mentos into Diet Coke bottles and the super-slow-mo action of Casio's EX-F1 camera to create this stunningly beautiful video.
Woodhead compensated for the 1200fps' paltry 336x96 frame size by stitching four different Mentos tests together, and the results are awesome. Globs, ribbons and rings of Coke that are impossible to track in real time come to life when seen in slow-motion.

It sounds like a “greatest Irish invention” joke, but it’s true. A Swiss company has invented an underwater car - and it’s a convertible. Costing around £750,000 to build, the Rinspeed sQuba concept car was inspired by James Bond’s The Spy Who Loved Me. The sQuba is a road-worthy car that, at the touch of a button, can transform into an amphibious vehicle. It is capable of diving to a depth of about 33 feet. When on the water, it is propelled by two propellers, while two powerful jets propel the vehicle underwater.
